  • Halting Tissue Suffocation: The weight of the body compresses the blood vessels between the mattress and bony areas (like the tailbone, hips, and heels). Turning the patient restores blood flow and oxygen to these areas before the skin and muscle layers die. 
  • Eliminating Shear and Friction: When a patient slumps or slides in bed, the skin sticks to the sheets while the skeleton pulls in the opposite direction. This tears deep blood vessels. Physically lifting and turning the patient resets the body alignment and relieves this internal stress.

  • Preventing Hypostatic Pneumonia: When a person lies flat in one position for hours, gravity causes mucus and fluid to pool in the lower sections of the lungs. Turning the patient from side to side forces the lungs to expand differently, helping to clear secretions and lower the risk of deadly respiratory infections.

  • Stopping Blood Clots: Immobility causes blood to pool in the deep veins of the legs, drastically increasing the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Regular turning helps pump blood back to the heart and prevents life-threatening clots from breaking free to the lungs.

  • Avoiding Contractures: Without regular positioning changes, muscles rapidly waste away (atrophy), and joints stiffen into permanent, painful, bent positions. Turning keeps limbs aligned, stretched, and functional.
